Fit a smoke alarm and test it regularly – and don’t overload electric sockets – two top tips to help keep your home safe this winter.
Life-saving advice about personal, home and road safety was given by New Forest fire, police, council and youth officers attending local Halloween and Bonfire Night community events recently.
Safety awareness messages were delivered to children and adults across the forest by Safer New Forest partners, including Hampshire police, Community Safety and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Youngsters received funky flashing lights so they could be seen on dark evenings and home fire safety checks were offered to residents.
New Forest District Council portfolio holder for housing and communities, Cllr Jill Cleary welcomed the multi-agency attendance at the public events.
“It was a huge success and we got a really good response from members of the public of all ages. The Partnership hopes that chatting to local people at these community events will help to spread the safety awareness messages most effectively.”
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service New Forest Group station manager Mick Thompson was pleased that so many local householders had been referred for home safety checks following the events.
“Hampshire fire teams offer free home safety visits which may help to save lives in the future,” he said.
The home safety visits include the installation of two smoke detectors per property, offering fire safety advice specific to the house and the occupants’ lifestyle and carrying out an informal risk assessment of the home to point out any fire hazards and offering solutions to reduce the risks.
If you think you are entitled to a free home safety visit or perhaps know an older person, a family member or neighbour, who would benefit from this service, contact your local fire station, call 023 8062 6809 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
