Broadband connection

Our main news is that faster broadband speeds for Hampshire residents and businesses have come a step closer now that State aid approval has been announced and Hampshire County Council has started the formal tender process to appoint a commercial partner.

Tender process underway for commercial partner
The successful company will implement Hampshire’s programme to bring faster broadband to areas of the county that will not be upgraded by the commercial market. An appointment is likely to be made in February/March 2013 and work will start on delivering faster broadband services in the summer of 2013

State aid approval from EU
State aid approval has been announced and Hampshire is one of eight projects currently out to tender using the Broadband Delivery UK
Framework. DCMS press release 20.11.2012 UK’s rural broadband project gets EU approval

£10 million of public funds to target 115,000 premises
The Invitation To Tender
is based on £5 million of government funding, matched by a further £5 million from Hampshire County Council and district council partners, which will be used in the programme intervention areas. The money will stimulate investment and finance the shortfall where there are too few potential customers to cover the costs of the upgrade to the network infrastructure. It is estimated that 115,000 residential and business premises in Hampshire will benefit from this public sector funding.

Broadband sign up campaign remains vital
We want as many people as possible to sign up to our campaign so that we can demonstrate to the commercial partner that wins our tender that there are plenty of potential customers who want to make use of this service. Evidence of high demand will help the programme funding go further, increasing the number of locations we are able to reach with the limited funding available.
* Please note, registering support does not commit anyone to sign up to a new service.

Roll out schedule
Once a commercial partner is appointed next year, we will work with them to draw up detailed plans with us for those areas that fall into the programme intervention area. We will provide a further update once the contract is awarded. Find out more about the Hampshire broadband programme
