“We Welcome You”
These are words from the Baptism service. In St.John’s
we do welcome families who bring their baby for baptism.
Sometimes it is called ‘Christening’ - which means making Christ’s. It is always a joy to make babies and sometimes older children or even occasionally adults members of Christ’s family.
We do this as part of our morning Communion service because being baptised means being part of Christ’s family and where better to become a member than when the family is at worship.
Baptism means doing our best to follow Jesus, trying to learn more about him as we grow and talking to him (praying) on a regular basis. As Christians we believe that this is the best way to live. The baptism service asks many questions of parents and godparents, one of them is “Do you turn to Christ as Saviour?”
Turning to Jesus means turning away from all those things that keep us from him. This does not mean to lead a sad colourless life but one that is lively and wonderful. Jesus said that he wanted us to ‘have life to the full’.
So come and have life to the full, follow Jesus - baptism is often the start of this way of living. Come - we welcome you.
