Did you know that up until July this year, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight were one of the few areas nationwide that did not have its own Air Ambulance Service?
This vital service, run alongside the normal emergency services, has proved invaluable since its inauguration with regard to reaching the parts other rescue services cannot reach!
Malcolm Moore came to Marchwood WI in March to talk about this fantastic new service that will soon be available in our area. Sometimes an accident has happened in a particularly inaccessible place, and it is necessary to have the ability to transfer a sick or injured person to hospital very quickly.
The yellow helicopters have a trained pilot (obviously) and two normal ambulance crew paramedics. The service has to be funded mostly from voluntary contributions and costs a staggering £65,000 per month to keep going. This is a very worthwhile cause, and one that stimulated a lot of interest and support amongst the members.
Val Charrington from Stockbridge has a Head for Hats! A two year course in millinery some years ago became a business for Val, making hats to match outfits for Ascot and weddings etc. Val described the intricate hat making process and her very precise training in the milliner’s craft. She brought along a large selection of hats she had made. The attention to detail was stunning and some of the ladies went home determined to have a go themselves at making the new tiny titfers called “fascinators”!
Shelly Lozano, a local cabaret artist, Middle Eastern dancer and dance teacher, shimmied her way around the Village Hall at the Marchwood WI’s party in May. She even managed an impromptu workshop, showing hip drops, camel walks and various other belly dance moves to the eager volunteers. Just the thing for an 86th birthday party!! Belly dancing is so good for you!! It is good for mobility, posture, femininity and mood!
During the summer months there will be talks on Dessert making,
Astronomy, the pros and cons of Middle Age (sixty is the new forty!), the annual mock auction and of course Marchwood WI’s biennial Craft and Produce Show on Saturday 11th August (this is open to the public in the afternoon).
Please come and join us at our monthly meetings, where you can be assured of a great welcome and a good time!
The meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.15 p.m. in Marchwood Village Hall. |
