Marchwood Infant School
Chinese Day
The Spring term at Marchwood Infant School had several memorable high spots for both the staff and the children. The first was Chinese Day on February 13th, planned to coincide with the Chinese New Year.
The children had a fantastic day doing all sorts of activities connected to China and how they celebrate their New Year. We had superb dragon masks made and some children in Year 1 made up their own dragon dance. Dragon puppets, coolie hats, lucky envelopes, fans, willow pattern plates and gardens were among many other things made, allowing the children to be creative whilst learning about the customs of another culture.
This lovely experience was followed by ‘Puppet Week’. The stimulus for this curriculum week came from a visit by the Puppeteers who performed ‘A Medley for Strings’ and introduced the children to a range of different puppets. They were shown rod, hand, string and body puppets giving the children ideas for designing and making their own puppets. The resulting work was of a very high standard and linked in with story writing, drama and many other areas of the curriculum. Displays of the children’s work still fill the school and have been admired by the many visitors we welcome to the school.
Book Day
Some very special visitors came in March – candidates who had applied for the deputy head teacher post beginning in September. Our long standing deputy, Mrs Gill Spencer, resigned her post in December and is now working part time as a class teacher, leaving her management role to be filled. I am delighted that Mrs Gillian Farbrother, currently working in New Milton Infant School, was successfully appointed and will be joining the staff as deputy from September.
As this process coincided with World Book Day, we decided to hold our own Marchwood Book Day on March 22nd. All the children and staff came to school dressed as a book character and we all had fun reading our favourite stories and books.
We are now looking forward to the summer term and all the exciting things we will be doing then. Our annual May Fayre is planned for 12th May and the PTA are hoping to raise lots of money to refurbish and resource the Music Room.
