| County Councillor's Report. |
| |
|
| County Councillor David Harrison |
I’m privileged to contribute an item for the 100th Edition of Marchwood Village News. Who knows, somebody may decide to keep a copy and it might be of historical interest in 100 years time! As your local County Councillor, I have been active in a number of areas in recent months. Apart from the usual round of meetings, surgery and site visits I have spent a lot of time opposing the application for a new waste transfer station in the village.
I’m sorry to report that, despite opposition from the Parish Council, the New Forest District Council and myself, the members of The Regulatory Committee of Hampshire County Council decided to approve the application on the grounds that there were insufficient planning grounds not to do so.
Most Marchwood residents will, I think, agree that the village has had to endure enough, what with a large industrial estate, the Energy from Waste facility, a Household Waste re-cycling facility, a sewerage works, a large military presence and a soon-to-be-constructed power station. I have now written to Councillor Ken Thornber, the Leader of Hampshire County Council, asking that he intervenes to stop this facility from going ahead. The County Council own the land and have the power to restore it to green land. I invite anyone reading this to write to him expressing your views. You can contact him via The Castle, Winchester, Hampshire.
On the traffic front, there is some good news. There have recently been some safety improvements to the junction of Staplewood Lane and the A326. These are aimed at making access a bit easier for buses. We also have a safer pedestrian crossing on Normandy Way, for access to and from the Admiralty Quay Estate. I have also requested the use of speed indicator devices (S.I.Ds), in the coming months on roads where speeding traffic is reported as a problem.
I still think that there is a real problem with HGV traffic, travelling through the village centre. Much of this traffic could use the bypass and I have been leaning on the County Council to impose formal restrictions. The authority did carry out a traffic survey last summer but, despite my urgings, have done little else. I continue to press. Watch this space!
As always, I’m really pleased to hear if I can help with any Hampshire County Council related issue. The best way of contacting me is by telephone 02380 864500 or E-Mail dharrison100@aol.com. |
