Marchwood Parish Council |
Mrs Cicely Crouch, a resident of Marchwood since 1972, celebrated her 100th Birthday in some style on April 20th. Mrs Crouch, who was born in Beaulieu, went to Park School in St. Leonards before leaving at age 14 to take up a position in service at The Grange, Beaulieu.
Cicely first met George her future husband, “the love of her life”, when he was working as a gardener at Exbury and Beaulieu, he passed her on his bicycle and stopped to speak to her.
Cicely and George got married in Beaulieu Abbey in 1930 and their son Dennis was born in 1932. George and Cicely were just about to set up their own market garden business when George was called away to war, serving in the Army. On his return they both went into service at ‘The House in the Woods’ located near the Motor Museum.
After moving to Marchwood they both attended St.John’s Church regularly and George maintained the churchyard for many years. A keen gardener, George grew many plants from seeds and Cicely was amused to find her airing cupboard was housing a propagator! Sadly George died in 1994.
Dennis, their son, has three children, Keith, Stuart and Sally and between them they have five children making Cicely a great grandmother. She is a very happy lady, and even at the grand age of 100 she still looks after herself at home doing her own cleaning and washing. She loves her garden which she tends if she feels a bit lonely, but we do not advise anyone to call on her while she is watching football on the T.V. !
Cicely still regularly attends St. John’s Church and achieved her birthday wish of attending Holy Communion on her birthday. She puts her good health down to ‘minding her own business and doing plenty of reading to keep her mind sharp’.
A special celebratory lunch was held at St. John’s Church Hall, attended by her son and his wife and about fifty friends, where presentations were made to Cicely of a bouquet, an album of church event photos from the Sunday School children and Cllr Ron Vango-Fisher presented her with an Orchid on behalf of the Parish Council.
Cicely now joins Mr Terrey as the village’s second centenarian. We send best wishes to them both. Very appropriately in this 100th edition. |
