Progress at Last
Many people have commented on the scaffolding around parts of our church. This was put there to protect people but by the end of June, we hope, the whole of the spire, tower and west wall of the church will be covered in scaffolding.
This is when the restoration of the church starts. English Heritage working in close co-operation with the church’s architect have been kind enough to agree on what needs to be done - stone by stone.
Both English Heritage and Onyx Trust have given large amounts of money to make this happen. For their contributions we are
enormously grateful.
The work will probable take about six months so it will not be completed until just after Christmas. It will, however, mean that once this part of the restoration is complete there will be no more scaffolding! We have enough money to complete the spire (including putting back the original cross on top), the tower and most of the west wall. The total cost of this is £236,000. Just a little bit more is needed to complete the work to ground level. Sometime in the future we will contemplate the restoration of the rest of the building.
Anyone who would like more detail on this project please contact the churchwarden, Mr. Clive Chivers, to whom we owe a great debt of gratitude for the tremendous amount of work he has done to make this happen, or the vicar.
Vision Day
On Saturday 30th July, St. John’s is having a Vision Day - a time when we can take stock of what we do as a Church, to reflect on our role in the community, to seek God’s will for us into the future and to reflect on the practical matters (buildings, finances, administration etc) which inevitably affect all organisations.
If you would like to come along and join in you will be very welcome. For further details please contact the vicar.
