Marchwood Women's Institute

Cartoonist par excellence Peter Pfeil from Hayling Island drew in the crowds at the March meeting. Peter had worked for the Portsmouth Echo for some years as their daily cartoonist …not easy to think of several topical subjects for the editor to have his choice of every day! He discussed various cartooning styles and staggered us with his swift and accurate representations using just a few lines! A very funny evening altogether!

In April, local Palmistry expert Christine Pain from Totton was on hand to provide an absolutely fascinating insight into this ancient life divining method. Christine explained how everyone’s hand falls into one of the four earth, air, fire and water shapes but the lines on the palms of the hand can show which paths we may take during our lifetimes. Christine said that as usual during her talks all she can see are the tops of peoples heads as they desperately try to recognise signs on their own hands! She also described how the shapes of fingers and nails was important as well….though no-one admitted to having the” murderers’ thumb”!

At the May Birthday Party our 84th!!!.... the theme was a garden party and the members were entertained by Ann the “Yorkshire char lady” a couple of local yokels singing about the joys of cider drinking, (Molly and Peggy), and with their own tribute to VE Day the “Williams Sisters” (Christine, Judy and Jean ) who sang a a selection of wartime “keep the home fires burning” type songs which the assembled throng joined in with great gusto!!

The BIG event this summer is our biennial “Craft and Produce show”. This is to be held in Marchwood Village Hall on Saturday 13th August 2005. The show will be open to the public from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and is free of charge! Please come and join us!

This is a chance for the whole community, to see the versatility of their Women’s Institute, and exhibits will include preserves, cookery, photography, floral arts, gardening, craft and a special section for children (members own or grandchildren).
There will be sales tables with preserves, cakes and produce either made or grown by our members.

Refreshments will be available during the afternoon and a huge fundraising raffle.
Marchwood W.I. is held on the second Tuesday of the month at Marchwood Village Hall from 7.15 p.m. and all are welcomed.
