| Veterans of the New Forest – we need you. |
| |
That is the message from New Forest District Council as it draws up its plans to support the second Government-backed National Veterans’ Day.
The big day nationally is on Wednesday, June 27, but New Forest District Council will be running a series of events in the build-up to that, from June 17 to 23.
It is keen to hear from Service and ex-Service groups and individuals, including civilians, who have been involved in all conflicts including the two World Wars, the Gulf War, the Falklands Campaign and all recent and current conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
The events are being held in recognition and respect for the unique contribution ex-Servicemen have made towards the security of the UK and the fabric of its communities.
New Forest Veterans’ week will begin with a special civic commemoration service at Lyndhurst Parish Church on Sunday, June 17, which will be a celebration of the lives of the people who have served or are still serving their country and their communities.
That will be followed by a ‘Meet the Veterans’ event at the Dibden Golf Centre on the morning of Thursday, June 21.
There will be an exhibition of memorabilia and invited children from local schools will have an opportunity to put prepared questions to a panel of veterans, who will later be able to share their memories with one another at a special lunch.
There will be a further chance for reminiscing at a garden party, by invitation, for veterans and their families in the picturesque grounds of the council’s Appletree Court offices at Lyndhurst.
Veterans’ groups and individuals are being asked to indicate their interest in the events by contacting NFDC’s communications department on 02380 285479 or by e-mail to dianne.bailey@nfdc.gov.uk
The council has stressed that the event, which was introduced last year by the Government to recognise the dedication of all Veterans, is in addition to and not instead of the Remembrance Day commemorations.
