Marchwood W.I |
Whodunnit?
Marchwood WI drama group provided the entire evening’s entertainment at the Christmas party. They presented a four act murder mystery play, with each act followed by delicious food provide by the WI members.
The play written by John Owen Smith (who pens the Jobsworth series of radio plays) centred around a discussion about replacing the village hall handyman, who had met an early demise headfirst down a manhole!! Did he fall or was he pushed?
The action takes place at a “candlelit supper” and proceedings were led by the (acting) president of the WI (of course!), a Mrs Pressing, and attended by representatives of the hall users, the Drama Group, Dance Classes, the Historical Society and the local Twinning Association who sent somebody French!!
A motley group! and well cast and costumed, but with a surprise appearance from a Mr Pastry lookalike, who was supposed to be closely related to Madame. A hugely hilarious time was had by all, both the audience and the actors.
Stand and Deliver!
No….not a request at an overcrowded maternity unit, but sound advice on Public Speaking which was given by Betty Fuller at the January meeting. Stand Up! Speak Up and Shut Up! Is a maxim that is easy to remember but not so easy to follow. Speaking in public in front of strangers or even people you know well can strike fear into the heart of the most outwardly confident person.
Mrs Fuller explained how following these simple rules, as well as being prepared, aware of your personal appearance and injecting some humour into your talk will all add to one’s confidence when facing an audience. Even having to make that “thank you” speech after a presentation need not be the worry that it generally is to most WI committee members.
And finally, in February, the sunshine and blue skies of Fiji were brought to Marchwood by some of the wives and daughters of the Fijian soldiers who are part of the military based in the village.
Salote and her friends introduced their culture to the members by way of song and dance, their beautiful bright costumes and some traditional recipes.
What a breath of fresh air these lovely smiling women brought to a dark February evening.
Other items to look forward to this Spring include, a talk on the Hampshire Air Ambulance in March, Mrs Charrington explaining how to make those tiny Ascot hats and Shelly Lazano doing an audience participation Belly Dancing lesson at the birthday party in May!
It is the 86th birthday of Marchwood WI this year and we are as strong as ever, members ages range from 17 to 90!!
There is always something new to learn and someone new to meet….we love it!!
Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month in Marchwood Village Hall at 7.15p.m. and all are welcome. |
