As I write, Southampton City Council is seeking Council Cabinet approval to install a laser gateway which involves shinning 4 laser beams out of the Belfry at the City Centre Clock Tower in a North, South, East and West orientation.
I understand that lasers light up particles in their path, mainly vapour and dust and on a clear night their range would be about 5 miles from light source. However, I understand when mist is present or during summer months, particularly when pollution or ozone is present in the atmosphere, the lasers could potentially emanate for 10 to 15 miles.
2 of these lasers would pass into New Forest District Council territory over Hythe and over the public house south of Eling.
Light is not development and the installation of these lasers does not require planning or any other consent as I understand it, so there are no formal channels for consultation.
This seems most strange to me and I feel an intrusion such as this into and over our New Forest should be challenged most strongly. If you agree, contact your District Councillor or your M.P.
A reminder that in a few weeks’ time the local elections are due and I would urge everyone to cast their vote. Do it when you visit the shops, picking up children from school or taking the dog for a walk - it only takes a few minutes.
Have your say in Marchwood.
