| Chairman’s Report |
| |
 |
| Cllr Keith Petty, Chairman of Marchwood Parish Council. |
The Parish Council has been very busy in the last three months with a variety of issues affecting our village from planning to policing.
Crime and anti-social behaviour has been a topic recently discussed by the Parish Council, following several incidents in the village. We are very pleased that we now have PC Elliot Campbell as our dedicated beat officer and he will be receiving support from Police Community Support Officers. This is part of a new initiative by Hampshire Constabulary in having community-based policing, to provide a more visible police presence. This new approach took effect at the end of January and we wait to see how effective it will be.
At the Council meeting we talked about the recent spate of graffiti and vandalism which we are aware is the work of a very small minority of young people in our village. It was stressed that the majority of the youngsters in our village are well behaved and it is important not to tar everyone with the same brush.
The Parish Council Planning Committee received the planning application for the Waste Transfer Site on the land of the old Incinerator. After careful consideration we decided that we would not support the application.
We are keen to see the public amenity site for household waste upgraded but are against the building of a waste transfer station in the village.
As a village we have had a variety of industry thrust upon us including the new incinerator and power station and we thought this was one development too far.
The Planning committee also expressed its concern about reviewing lorry movements within Marchwood. Hampshire County Council undertook a vehicle survey at the end of the summer as part of the overall traffic management plan for the village but they have informed us that they don’t have the resources to analyse the results. However, as this is an important issue within the village, we would like to see further action to alleviate the problem and have written to the County Council urging them to reconsider and to undertake this work as a matter of priority.
We are currently looking at improvements to the under 12 play park in the centre of the Village, behind the Village Hall. Plans have been drawn up, which are now being considered by the Junior School children to ensure it’s what they would like to see. We are then going to apply for a grant to fund the majority of the work. Hopefully work could then commence in April, fingers crossed. Play is obviously an important part of children’s development and having good quality and stimulating play areas has been high on the Parish Council’s objectives. The Community Plan process is in full swing, nearly 300 hundred replies were received, plus the Infant and Junior School contributions. The results are now being analysed by the Community Planning group which is taking the next step towards producing our Community Plan. More details can be found in their article later on in the Village News. I was interested to see that for the question “things I like about Marchwood” the Parish Council scored the same as the Pubs!
As always we welcome feedback from everyone in the village, so feel free to contact your Councillors or attend any of our meetings. The Annual Parish Meeting takes place on Monday 16th April 7.30pm where you will have the opportunity to find out more about the activities of your Council over the last year and are also able to put questions to your Councillors on any matters of concern.
May 2007 marks the end of my current term of office as Chairman and also the four year term for all of the Councillors on the Parish Council. Elections for the Parish Council take place on May 3rd. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the other ten Parish Councillors for their hard work and dedication. We have, acting as a team, strived to look at ways of improving our village while at the same time protecting all of the things that make our village special. |
