The Handy Trust 1999 - 2006

Volunteer Fund Raiser Required

The Handy Trust is a local Waterside charity set up in 1999 to provide support and guidance for children and young people. Initially it provided one detached youth worker for Hythe. It has now expanded and provides 3 detached youth workers who are based at Hythe, Netley View and Marchwood.

The youth workers run youth clubs in these areas and when funds allow arrange trips for young people to go ice-skating , bowling etc.

They organise several major annual events on the Waterside:

  • Battle of the Bands: Competition for local budding young musicians to be heard.
  • Sports in the Park: a free activity afternoon held twice a week during the summer holidays in Hythe, Marchwood and Netley View. The children can try a variety of activities including, football, tennis, rounders, glass painting, clay modelling and arts and crafts. This year, 1076 local children attended.

The Handy Trust works with local schools, including Applemore and Noadswood, giving advice, education and support on a variety of topics:

  • Quit- Teen (smoking cessations): a six week course offering support to those teenagers who wish to stop smoking.
  • Advice and education on drugs and alcohol.
  • “On the Right Track”: supporting those children who are in danger of being excluded.

This work often starts while the child is in junior school supporting and guiding them through the transition to senior school.

Our youth workers help to support local teenage mums, arranging trips out for them and their children, Christmas parties, and education on how to care for their children.

Youth workers also help to support children who live in our area who have many problematic and difficult home lives which we can only imagine. The Handy Trust helps to guide and support these children through their teenage years. This is only a small part of the work that the Handy Trust takes on.

We desperately need a volunteer fund raiser. If you could spare the time and have experience of applying for grants please contact:

Alison Hoare 023 8087 2979 or Candy Huxham 07734 423809
