In July last year the Gospel Church started a new venture called “Refreshers”. The idea was just to open up the church on a Friday afternoon so that people could come in for a chat with friends, a cup of tea or coffee, and home-made cakes.
It was summer time, and we were able to sit out in the car park under sun umbrellas and a gazebo, watching village life pass by. We expected one or two people to wander in, but right from the start we have been delighted by the success of the
afternoons. Could it be the quality of the delicious cakes which turn up each week?
Since it turned a bit colder we have had to move inside, but this hasn’t dampened enthusiasm, and guests from babies to those in their nineties pile in to the building. It’s a true mix of age-groups, from toddlers playing on the floor with the toys, to the teenagers who come in on their way home from school, to Mums and Dads who want to share their parenting nightmares with each other and senior citizens who love to meet up with friends, and lots of others in between.
