“The Spirit of Christmas Present” was alive and well at St. John’s Church in Marchwood in December when Marchwood WI hosted the 2005 Beaulieu Group Christmas Carol Concert.
The builders who have been working on the regeneration of this Victorian church were so kind as to keep all building work, drilling and hammering to a minimum whilst the carol service was going on. Their consideration was rewarded with plates of mince pies provided by the hostesses.
The new President Peggy Barnett (Marchwood W.I’s. ex long serving secretary) welcomed members to the Christmas party. A sit down meal was followed by a performance of seasonal songs by the Woodland Singers. What a treat!
This was to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the W.I. movement. A powerful organisation formed incredibly in 1915 which has gone from strength to strength ever since.
This year is Marchwood W.I.’s own 85th birthday and it is still a strongly supported meeting place for women of all ages from 15 to 80 and beyond!
In January, a “Frivolous, Fabulous Fashion show” by Frantastic of Totton, proved to be the perfect antidote to those “eaten too much, drank too much, spent too much” post - Christmas blues!
Fran Fountain and her lovely models, sleek, svelte, vivacious and voluptuous, showed a range of “posh frocks” suitable for the most demanding occasions. whether mother of the bride or bridegroom, going to the races, or on a cruise and hoping for an invitation to sit at the captain’s table!
The February meeting actually fell on St Valentine’s Day and the evening revolved around all things romantic, including a Valentines Day Quiz, favourite poems or readings about love and anecdotes from the members as to how they met their partners. Finally, everyone shared a variety of luscious desserts.
This year’s programme is as interesting and varied as ever, always new things to learn, new people to meet as well as reviving old friendships and maintaining old crafts.
Marchwood W.I. meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.15 p.m. in Marchwood Village Hall, and all are welcomed.
