I am rather puzzled at the moment because life is full of both good news and bad news. It is sometimes difficult to make sense of it.
At the time of writing there are many hundreds of people in Pakistan who are freezing because they have no food and shelter. Sadly they are the victims of the recent earthquake. The pictures seen recently on television of those poor people suffering because of lack of food, shelter and medicine almost brings tears to the eyes.
Against this the good news is that we were able to send an experienced rescue team with a small submarine to free a Russian submarine and its crew, which were trapped at the bottom of the sea. With hours to spare we thank God that they were successful and that the Russians were rescued. What I find odd is that it is possible to move one machine half way around the world but we are incapable of moving food and tents from one part of a country to another.
There is some more good news/bad news. The bad news is that many of the people in New Orleans have not yet received any assistance in rebuilding their homes from when the hurricane struck. There are vast areas of rubble where there used to be happy homes. Many of these people still have nowhere to call their own.
The good news (if it is that) is that it is possible to send a vehicle into space, which will photograph Pluto, the most distant planet in our solar system. I find it most incredible that it is possible to spend money sending a spaceship millions of miles but not possible to build houses when they are needed.
We seem to live in a crazy upside- down world and when we watch the news to hear and see such things as this we can easily be left in a state of bewilderment. As a Christian I try and balance this against the sayings of Jesus “If you did it for one of these little ones you did it for me. But if you did not do if for one of these little ones then you did not do it for me”.
