| County Cllr Harrison |
As the winter months draw to a close I thought it would be nice to write a positive piece for Marchwood News, concentrating on some of the good things that are happening in and around the village.
One of the great joys of being a County Councillor is that you get involved, or at least informed, about a whole variety of different issues and many of them will have an impact on the residents of Marchwood.
On highways, there have been and will be improvements on the way. In different places there have been works aimed at improving our road structure, including traffic calming, better signage, white lines and re-surfacing.
The lorry restrictions seem to have helped. I am working on the most difficult problem, Hythe Road. Through bringing together schools, parents, lorry operators, police and County Highway Officers it should be possible to improve safety. Whilst it is clear that views differ as to the best way of achieving this, everyone agrees that measures are long overdue.
I expect to see an improved police presence in Marchwood, not least because the County Council has decided to recruit hundreds of additional Community Safety Officers. Problems of anti-social behaviour can also be tackled by more youth provision and there are good examples of some great work being done in the area. I’m hopeful that a site for a youth club will be sorted soon.
I am assured that the ugly old waste transfer site will indeed be demolished. “Onyx” have some exciting plans for improving the site as well as much welcome improvements to the amenity tip facilities.
As a member of Hampshire Fire & Rescue Authority, I have been pleased to help re-shape the organisation. I believe we can look forward to receiving a more effective service, with more emphasis on prevention than has ever been previously the case.
Hampshire Ambulance Service seems to be performing better, judging by recent reports. The threat of closing most stations in the New Forest appears to have been lifted. It is expected that response times will improve still further.
I realise that a lot of people reading this will want to bring to my attention things that are still not right. I would be very pleased to hear from you!
I’m usually in attendance at Councillor Surgeries on the first Tuesday of every month at the Village Hall, 7pm.
