Hello, I’m
Angela Arney and I’ve been a Parish Councillor
now for about a year. I’m quite new to Marchwood
and enjoy living here. As I had always lived and went
to school in Winchester before moving to the Hill Lane
area of Southampton, I knew very little about Marchwood
and the Waterside before I moved here.
I was surprised and pleased with what I found. I think
sometimes it should be called Marchwood on Test, because
that is what it is. You have a lovely promenade along
the edge of the river, where people, including myself,
enjoy walking and fishing.
The only pity is the litter,
which a few people leave behind. I’m sad to say
it seems that the fishermen are the biggest culprits,
as I often walk along and collect some of the rubbish
into a bag. I find yards of nylon line, complete with
hooks, boxes of discarded bait, sandwich and take-away
boxes and bottles and cans.
All these things are not
only an eyesore, but are dangerous for the children and
animals, who also use this area. It’s such a lovely
spot I’m surprised that people don’t take
more care of the amenity they have.
It would be so easy to keep clean. If everyone took home
what they brought down to the shore there wouldn’t
be a litter problem. If you can carry it down, you can
carry it back. It’s as easy as that, and costs
nothing. Remember employing people to pick up litter
costs money, and none of us want to pay more council
tax than necessary.
Since I’ve been on the Parish Council I’ve
been impressed by the hard work the other councillors
put in on your behalf. It’s all too easy, to say
THEY should be doing this, or that, but they can only
do what is within their power, and also they need to
know when things go wrong. Come to some of the meetings
and have your say, or write letters of complaint or congratulations.
They will always be welcome, especially the letters of
congratulations.
I think the children of this area are
particularly well catered for with a youth worker, Lloyd’s
Rec and other playgrounds, all of which are only there
because of efforts by the Parish Council which, in order
to achieve anything, has to struggle through a mass of
bureaucratic red tape.
I would urge all of you to read the Village News and
also the village notice board. Useful addresses, and
phone numbers can be found there. For instance, who and
what information to give when a street light fails.
By
the way the number is 080050 60 60 and GIVE THE NUMBER
WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON THE LAMP-POST.
I have been nominated as Vice Chair of the Policy and
Resources Committee, and attend the New Forest Environmental
Liaison Committee, when I can – this is mainly
of scientific interest and members of the public can
attend. Besides, now with the new Freedom of Information
Act, you can ask local councils for information you are
interested in. However, your Parish Council does try
to look after your interests in this area also.
If you have any ideas of how Marchwood can be made a
better place, don’t mutter about it in a corner
and say nothing is being done!! Come to a meeting, or
write a letter putting forward your ideas.
It’s people who make places vibrant and worthwhile.
Marchwood will be as good as you make it. It’s
up to you as well as the Parish Council.
I look forward to meeting more residents at a Parish
Council Meeting.
