Last term at the Infant
School was a busy and exciting one. We have been delighted
to welcome 74 new Reception children who have started
their school journey confidently at Marchwood Infant
School. They have learnt a great deal about the routines
and expectations of school life but with all the excitement
of Christmas in school it was a tiring term for them.
The children, as always, made us and their parents
very proud when they put on the performance of the
Snow Child, a Russian folk tale of a little girl
made of snow who came back every Christmas with the
nativity, reminding us of the constant cycle of the
seasons. All those who came to see the performances
said how much they enjoyed seeing the children act,
dance, sing and play instruments with such self-assurance. It
was lovely to perform our Christmas show in our newly
refurbished hall. The redecoration, new curtains,
new PE apparatus and newly
laid wooden floor were finally finished in November,
just in time for the
hall to be declared officially ‘open’ coinciding
with the same day as
the school was opened 150 years ago.
This took place
on 25 November 1854. To mark the occasion we held
a special assembly and had two
PE days when a fully trained gymnastics coach led
a PE lesson with
each class in the school, using our new equipment
and apparatus.
It was a very successful way for the children to
celebrate having a new hall and I know the improved
facility is welcomed and appreciated by all
those members of the community who hire the hall
on a regular basis.
In our bid always to give the children at Marchwood
the very best teaching and learning environment,
we now have interactive whiteboards installed in
four classrooms. We have managed to raise funds for
these through our very successful Parent Teacher
fund raising events, as well as from grants kindly
donated by Exxonmobil.
They have a scheme whereby
employees who give voluntary support to schools,
such as governors, PTA members etc. are eligible
to apply for grants to support designated projects.
These whiteboards linked to computers are an excellent
aid to children’s learning and allow them to
interact with programs, which support many areas
of the curriculum.
I would particularly like to thank
our very committed and dedicated PTA who work so
hard to arrange money raising events and to all the
parents who have support these events. Sincere thanks
must also go to Exxonmobil for their generous funding
which has enabled us to install the boards thereby
providing so many of our children access to their
learning through modern technology.
Now that the Spring term is here we are particularly looking forward to the warmer
weather so we can get out into our newly established Science Garden. This is
another superb learning facility, which we hope will further support and stimulate
the children’s desire to experience learning firsthand!
