It was on January 15th 2005;
2 years and 365 days after the fire, (2004 being a
Leap Year), that we finally got round to erecting on
our new building the name of the church that worships
there.
The Gospel Church.
That old word ‘gospel’ really
means good news, and in a world where bad news travels
faster than ever to reach our television screens, there
is great comfort to be found in the Christian Faith
with its unchanging message of “good tidings
to all men”, first heard by those shepherds at
Bethlehem long ago.
Of course the word ‘Gospel’ is still used in our everyday language.
For example, if we wish to stress the absolute correctness of something we say “that’s
the gospel truth”. When we say that, we are referring to those four ‘Gospels’ written
by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, which provide us with all we know for certain
about the life and teaching of Jesus here on earth.
Also occasionally, because of our name, we as a church receive enquiries as to
whether we have a Gospel Choir, that exuberant form of hymn singing which has
come to us from across the Atlantic, and is now much loved over here. Well, that
is not quite our style; but we do sing many of the same spiritual songs, and
with our gifted music group leading the singing, we do indeed lift up hearts
and hands and voices in joyful praise.
However, there are some days when all Christians excel themselves in exuberant
praise to God, and one of those days will occur on Sunday, March 27th, Easter
Sunday, which is really THE GREAT Good News Day of our faith. It is then, after
re-living the painful darkness of Good Friday, and the depressive gloom of Easter
Saturday, that the Church awakes anew to re-live the exciting experience of those
who first saw Jesus when He rose again from the dead. On such a day, those 2000
years just seem to roll away, and in the 21st Century, sad hearts can rejoice
once more.
So why not join one of the congregations of the churches in the village this
Easter. Then we will recall the Gospel truths we all believe, and share together
the change that Good News has brought into our lives.
As far as the Gospel Church is concerned, I would particularly like to draw you
attention to our Good Friday morning service at 10.30 and our Easter Sunday services
at 11am and 6.30pm and I warmly welcome you to come.
