I was once told not to read a book because it might change my life for ever. Needless to say I soon went out and bought it just to find out what I shouldn’t read. “Rich Chirstians in an Age of Hunger” is a book which has had a profound effect on me - even after many years.
It simply states that there is enough money and resources in the world to feed the hungry and solve the world’s problems. This may see odd as there have been huge problems of starvation, under development, those who suffer as a result of natural disasters - earthquakes, tsunami and more recently flooding our our own country. Events like red nose day helps a great deal in raising money to help those who desperately need it as do many other charitbable organisations. More locally the Southampton charity “Scratch” which helps those in need in this area never has quite enough money to do all that it wants.
So what is the answer? That book simply says that we are all guilty of not doing a little to help. Do we need such an expensive car, do we need to spend so much on a holiday, we all what everything when we could share, do we need as many clothes, do we need to use the car when we could walk? All these things could save money (according to that book) and then we would release money to help those who really need it in the world.
I do wonder how much will be done to stop the recent floods from happening again - if we have the technology to send someone to the moon then I am sure there is the know-how to prevent such a disaster. We have the money - it is just in the wrong place. Some earn more than they can spend.
Perhaps the best way out is for Christians to pray that these problems may be solved and that we all play our part in helping in whatever way we can.
Jesus said that we should love one another - perhaps we need to express that love in preventing floods happening again.
