Solent Gateway Ltd, the new operators of Marchwood Military Port in Hampshire, is now looking to recruit around 50 new employees to support military operations at the facility.
It has now been confirmed that the company will take over full control of port operations from the Ministry of Defence from October 1.
The company is looking for a range of Sponsored Reserves who will be employed as civilian port operators and supervisors but will have a joint Army Reserve role as required.
‘We are looking forward to building a strong working partnership with the Army at Marchwood and are now in position to actively start recruiting key people.’
‘Although the majority of the time these employees will be based in a civilian port operator role at Marchwood, there will be occasions when they are mobilised as Army Reservists. Once mobilised, they will deploy with 165 Port and Maritime Regiment, Royal Logistics Corp,’ said Solent Gateway’s interim Port Director, Brian Fulton.
‘As part of their Army Reserve role employees could potentially undertake deployments lasting up to six months anywhere in the world.’
Solent Gateway is a joint venture between transport specialists David MacBrayne Ltd (DML) and global logistics firm GBA (Holdings) Ltd, who last year won a 35 year concession from the Ministry of Defence to manage Marchwood as a military support facility and to develop wider commercial opportunities on the site.
As well as Sponsored Reserves the company is also looking for a number of specialist civilian posts in commercial operations, business analysis, health and safety and human resources.
‘Full details of our longer term commercial plans for the port are still being worked through and these will be shared with the local community as we familiarise ourselves with the project and start to look at what will be feasible. Meanwhile, we will be concentrating on the core function of supporting army operations at Marchwood,’ said SGL chairman, Captain Sam Judah MBE.
‘Marchwood presents significant opportunities for additional commercial development and further job opportunities on site, but we appreciate the sensitivities of the local environment and any plans we have will be shared locally when we are in a position to do so.’
